Martin Williams, Creative Director

Across two decades making films, Martin, Director, Writer, Producer & Founder of Talesmith, has built a reputation for films with impact visuals and powerful narratives at their core. He has won critical acclaim and numerous industry awards in the process and has always been at the cutting edge of innovation and new technologies, having directed one of the UK’s first documentaries in HD Great American Motorcycle (Discovery HD Theatre; 2003) and having been the creative driving force behind David Attenborough’s recent forays into 3D.

Martin’s credits include the RTS winning Galapagos 3D (Sky One, Sky 3D & IMAX 2013), the BAFTA nominated series David Attenborough’s Kingdom of Plants 3D (Sky One & Sky 3D, 2012), the triple Emmy winning and twice BAFTA nominated David Attenborough’s First Life (BBC2, 2010), Attenborough’s Journey (BBC2, 2010), the Emmy nominated Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking (Discovery, Channel 4; 2010), Inside Planet Earth (Discovery; 2009), Growing Babies (BBC4, 2008), Inside the Living Body (National Geographic, Channel 4; 2007) which won an Emmy award for VFX, Red Arrows (BBC1, 2006) and the Emmy and Grierson nominated Wave that Shook the World (PBS, Channel 4; 2005), a quick turnaround film on the Boxing Day tsunami that aired just a month after it struck, for which he was awarded an AAAS science journalism award.

More recently Martin has been building full scale filming burrows for rabbits, badgers and water voles in the Panda and Grierson nominated The Burrower’s: Animals Underground (BBC2; 2013); he has been hanging out with Her Majesty in The Queen’s Garden (ITV1; 2014) and charting the rise of cats in Sky’s new 4K extravaganza Big Cats: An Amazing Animal Family. This year Martin took his first foray into drama with the innovative virtual reality hybrid Flyspy (2016).

With glossy natural history, specialist factual and compelling documentary close to our heart, Talesmith are focused on the broadcast-feature hinterland, producing high-end content for television, museums and cinema. Our team has a long track record in producing award-winning content fronted by some of the biggest names in television and was founded by BAFTA & 4 time EMMY award winning film-maker Martin Williams whose credits include Big Cats: An Amazing Animal Family, Galapagos 3D with David Attenborough, Kingdom of Plants 3D with David Attenborough, The Burrowers: Animals Underground, The Queens Garden, Stephen Hawking’s Universe, and David Attenborough’s First Life. Our aim is to deliver the highest quality films and series for UK, US and international broadcasters and for theatrical release.

Talesmith was established in 2005 as a tax vehicle for freelance director Martin Williams, The status quo remained until June 2015 when Martin made the decision to turn the business into a fully-fledged production company. He had just completed a year running Offspring Films, having won his first commission from Sky to make Big Cats: An Amazing Animal Family. After that he made the call to go it alone with Talesmith using the revenue from Offspring to start up. Talesmith currently has 4 members of staff and is run from an office in Soho with a fantastic view of the Crossrail building site.
