West York’s Export Labs
When and where will the programme take place?
The programme will take a hybrid approach, combining in-person and digital delivery, so that your company can benefit from the advantages of both.
In-person seminars, masterclasses and panel sessions will take place in a central Leeds venue, on the following dates:
Module One: Thursday 3 and Friday 4 February 2022
Module Two: Thursday 3 and Friday 4 March 2022
Module Three: Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 March 2022
Module Four: Thursday 28 and Friday 29 April 2022
Module Five: Thursday 26 and Friday 27 May 2022
There will be other virtual and in-person events across the year, details of which will be provided when you are accepted onto the programme.
Is there a charge to take part?
Indielab West Yorks is funded by The Creative Catalyst programme. As a result, participation by either one or two company members is fully funded for the entire programme.
Is my company in the right location to take part?
Indielab West Yorks is designed specifically for companies based in West Yorkshire - the metropolitan boroughs of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. We welcome applications from companies based in these areas. Though not in West Yorkshire, we can also accept a limited number of applications from companies based in York and Harrogate.
Who will the speakers and trainers be?
Throughout the programme we will be inviting industry leaders from the across the UK and global sectors to deliver insight and perspective. These speakers will include broadcasters, commissioning editors, distributors, SVODs, indie sector leaders, investors and legal and financial specialists. Full details of speakers will be provided when you are accepted onto the programme, but details of our many previous speakers can be found here, and details of our trainers found here.
Who will deliver the coaching and mentoring?
Tailored one-to-one coaching will be available for each participating company in the latter part of 2022, and will be bespoke to your business growth needs. The programme’s mentoring scheme will be peer-to-peer – you will be paired with another indie founder who is further along the growth cycle.
Is the programme just for founders? Can I bring another member of the team?
Indielab is designed for founders and senior leadership team members responsible for company growth. We offer two places per company on the programme for founders and senior leaders from each company.
What if I can’t attend one of the dates?
We are happy for you to nominate a colleague to attend in your place if you are unable to make a specific date. However, we do require that nominated attendees attend at least 80% of the programme.
Is the programme for companies looking to raise investment?
We are a growth accelerator and look at all aspects of growth; working closely with you over the course of the programme, we will help you decide whether seeking investment is relevant for your growth path or not. There is no obligation for companies to pitch for investment, but if you decide to pitch, our team of experts will support you through the pitch process.
Do you accept applications from start-ups?
Yes - although start-up places are limited, and most attendees are scale-ups. There will be places for two start-ups where the founder has been a producer or executive producer of two ‘Relevant Projects’ in the last three years. A Relevant Project is one which has been broadcast or distributed theatrically or received a significant digital release in the UK or global market in the last three years.
Who will the other companies be?
Companies from across the creative content sector, and across the West Yorkshire region, all focused on developing their growth. Two cohorts of local businesses will take part in two separate accelerators - a TV Accelerator for production companies producing scripted or non-scripted content, and a Games Accelerator for game developers and games studios. The two accelerators will run simultaneously, to enable the cohorts to work separately and also attend some events together.
Will I have to disclose confidential information about my company?
You can disclose as much or as little as you wish, and you will not be required to share sensitive company information in front of other participant companies. However, you may find you get less out of the programme if you are not happy to share your experiences.
Can I apply again if I am not accepted onto the programme?
If you are unsuccessful in your application then we still want to keep in touch with you. We’ll keep you updated on our local events and other Indielab programmes, for which we would encourage you to apply.
What happens if government restrictions impact on live events?
All elements of the programme can be delivered online via our platform and virtual conferencing suite, and we have been refining the tools and techniques necessary to achieve this over the past two years. The safety of our delegates and team is paramount; we will advise you of all necessary COVID safety requirements at our in-person events, and if restrictions around COVID require it, we will adapt some or all of the in-person sessions for digital delivery.
