Business and Operations Manager

The position will be four days per week initially, increasing to five days as the company expands. The position is permanent, with a three-month probationary period.
The salary will be £45 – 50k pro rata and depending on experience.

As business and operations manager, you will be part of the senior leadership team delivering on all business objectives closely with the CEO and other senior team members. You will play a critical role in the development and delivery of our business operations and management across all of our activities.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Managing the internal financial operations of the business, including invoice management, cost reporting, and with direct responsibility for line managing the book-keeper.

  • Leading on HR, recruiting, monitoring of staff holidays, training, 121 catch ups with all team members and wellbeing.

  • Leading on the creation and ongoing review of company policies and monitoring their implementation, in collaboration with other team members.

  • Responsibility for putting in place, reviewing and maintaining all insurance and other business protections needed.

  • Leading commercial agreements preparation and negotiation, drafting (from template) and negotiation of company legal agreements, including but not limited to employment agreements, NDAs, funding agreements, partnership agreements etc.

  • Implementing effective companywide resource planning, so we are using our human and physical resources effectively and efficiently, managing costs at all times, and planning ahead for resource and recruitment needs.

  • Monitoring, and reporting, on deliverables to funding partners.

  • Leading logistical programme management across our programmes and events.

  • Responsibility for managing the IT storage arrangements, IT security, and organisation of the filing of all company information.

  • Managing all offices arrangements, logistics, comms arrangements for the company.

  • Project financial management: creating the budget, schedule, revenue model and then cost management for all programmes we deliver as well as new projects, events, and initiatives to evaluate business case.

  • Lead on revenue development alongside the CEO and Programme Producer’s, creating your own new revenue lines, creating new business opportunities and supporting other team members across business development activities.

  • Engagement with new and existing clients as well as negotiating and closing deals.

  • Collaborate with directors at Indielab to support strategic priorities, as well as ways of working together successfully.

  • Establish new practices for business management, working with the team to fine tune all aspects of the business as we develop.

  • Identify opportunities to innovate, drawing on a keen understanding of business management and broader industry opportunities.

Skills and Experience

  • Five + years experience in business / operations management.

  • Proven record working as part of small teams in fast-paced events environments and managing change with flexibility.

  • Strong communication, curiosity and collaboration skills. Ability to communicate effectively and build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.

  • Mission-driven and keen to support and grow our business and our community; welcoming people from every discipline and culture.

  • Experience of successfully collaborating with remote or distributed teams.

  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment where we navigate the complexities of both scale and crafted experiences.

  • Excellent spoken and written communication.

  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, and ability to multi-task.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage a busy workload and work independently or on initiative where required.

  • High level of computer experience, using core Microsoft software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), as well as confidence when using new and emerging platforms.

Workplace Conditions:

The role will be a mixture of remote working and working from Tunbridge Wells.
The Business and Operations Manager may also be required to attend various events/ meetings throughout the year in Leeds, London, North East & Glasgow.
